Mighty Hyenas 2011

T1 U/12:
Hyenas went full circle going from most defensive team in 2010 to the offensive team in 2011
with only 1 loss for the whole competition went on to become champions again fter defeating St virgils green in the Grand final after a brilliant effort from Bass shutting down the tall african forward and going on to boot 3 goals! notable mention of Edgar Sheedy's brilliant strategy of substituting the tall forward line to a smaller faster forward line thus confusing the opposition!!

T3 U/13
What a remarkable start to the T3 2011 Futsal season.  The boys competing in the U13 Division truly have a baptism of fire!!!
In round 1,  we faced last year’s  division defending champion (from what I heard a.k.a. Zebside?) and beat them 3-2.  The match-up between Pajari and Locky(Central region) was a thrill to watch, Jesse slick passing that resulted to Oscar Awesome goal, Nathaniel’s speed and endurance,  Harry and Paul’s solid efforts in goals and outfield and Fearless Bass double goal set up our maiden win in the higher division.

In round 2, we faced the 2 time finalist in the last 2 terms of Futsal and the cream of the U14 Olympia team who finished runner up in the U14 cup competition in this year’s soccer season. It was game of cat and mouse with both teams showing good tactical skills.  The Hyenas opened the scoring with a mighty effort from Bass although playing only 12 minutes of the match showed it is quality rather than quantity that mattered the most. The boys showed their quality and in the first half dominated attack and possession.  In the second half the quality of play intensified and both teams have a lot of chances and equally good defensive tactics.  A draw was well deserved by both team.

I believe we are just warming up in the competition and still building up in our development and the signs are good.  We need to improve in finishing the match strongly as we  conceded the 3 goals in the last 2 minutes of the games.

Where we can improve:  3rd man running, Isolation plays, pick and roll.

Round 3 vs  Goalski : saw thereturn of the Hyenas #1 fan Trung and this match proved to be quite entertaining.  The mighty Hyenas started really well, the ball distribution and keeping possession was of good quality.  Although a goal was conceded early in the game, the Hyenas played with composure which resulted with the equaliser in the first half. It was Oscar’s feed to the fast finishing Nathaniel that made it happen.   In the second half, Jesse and Nathaniel were sensational early that gave the Hyenas the lead.  The goal however, lured the Hyenas into over confidence and were intent only in going for the offense that brought their undoing as they left the back open for a Goalski counterattack with 3 attacking players against the lone goalkeeper.  Goalski step up their pace and the Hyenas GK have to make a series of sensational saves to keep they Hyenas in the game as they were trailing 2-3 late in the 2nd half.  Typical of the Henas never say die attitude they went into full gear dominating possession and had series of opportunity to equalise but the Goalski GK stood tall and was  equal to the task of denying Hyenas the equaliser they so desperately desired.  A backline mistake by the Hyenas close to full time resulted in 2-4 loss to the Hyenas at full time, their first for the season.  All in all, Goalski was a worthy opponent and their experience coupled with their age and maturity proved the difference.  This loss however, will undoubtedly provide the impetus to the hungry Hyenas for greater efforts and unity to bounce back in their next game of the season.  They have experienced this in the past and I am certain they will do so again.

Rd 4 Vs Beachside fc:
Beachside taught the Hyenas how to play beautiful Futsal.  Beachside is an embodiment of counter-attacking, quick-transition, and efficient use of space style of Futsal.  It was a thrill to watch!  As disappointing it is to lose but it also taught us a good lesson in Futsal and I have learnt a lot watching, I hope the Hyenas players did too.  The Hyenas are by no means outplayed as they also have a fair share of opportunities at goals.  Oscar was persistent and was again rewarded with a goal from a rebound of Nathaniel’s strike at goal .  Jessie was also in the scoreboard courtesy of a slick pass from Paul.  Nathaniel and Paul hassled Beachside and rewarded with possessions after possession.  Pajari’s countless goal strike effort was repeatedly thwarted by the defence and Beachside GK but I am sure it will just be a matter of time for our most prolific goal scorer to click and the Hyenas will be back in business.

Round 4.5 (4th November) vs opponents fc :  probably the most exciting match of the season thus far!! For some reason the stands were packed to to full capacity (probably to  see  if the mighty Hyenas can snap an unprecedented  2 game losing streak and re establish themselves in the this tough age group the hyenas scored within 5 seconds with Bass booting it from the kickoff which made the stands go wild!! Hyenas 1-0 the match then unfolded at  a frenetic pace with the opponents charging down the wings looking to a certain goal only to be denied by thr brilliant keeper Paulie who courageously put his body on the line and dived at everything, but unfortunately he was unable to maintain a clean sheet as the opponents all charged in at once and scored taking it to 1-1. next kick off wasnt quite the same as the opponents were wary of the big bass boot so surrounded him, Bass quick thinking back heeled it to Awesome who broke loose and charged the the left wing which sent the crowd wild all chanting 'Oscar! 'Oscar! (jillsome was so excited she fainted)! he dribbled past 2 defenders then in the corner of his eye spotted a running  open Pajari to which whom he passed and upon reception did a brilliant ballerina like pirouette to escape the defender slotting a brilliant goal giving the Hyenas the lead 2-1. the opponents then became a different team almost brazilian like passing like madness and scored another goal 2-2!  half time. the half time speech by coach eddie as the most empowering and emotion  to date he urged his players to play for a little boy who loved futsal but due to a brain haemorrhage became paralysed to the left half of his body and therefore had to give up his dream of playing for the hyenas this brought the boys to tears and with an almighty chant of 'Hyenas!' they menacingly took their positions in the 2nd half with a quick back heel to left winger Paulie who juggled the ball for what seemed like an eternity dumbfounded the opponents spotted Jesse in front of goals and passed to him. Jesse then  performed an acrobatic back somersault and scored with a header earning him a 10 from the russian judge. 3-2. the opponents must have also received the same speech as they also played magnificiently constantly charging down the centre of the court lining up to score only to have the ball stolen by Nathaniel time after time. but the opponents did not give up and kept attackingbut  Harry was up to the task and stopped ball after ball using his bouncy curls, but unfortunatey one ball deflected off one of his  longer curls and straight into the left corner . 3-3 the match kept going back and forth with hyenas attacking then the opponent attacking but the hyena defence led by Nathaniel bonded together and shut the opponents down. this resulted in the scores remaining unchanged 3-3 Penalty shotout,  first up Opponentsfc Paulie in Goals the oponent striker charged in and struck the ball with such a force it sounded like thunder. Paulie tried his best but just tipped his fingers and rolled in opponents 1-0
Bass then walked in booted the ball with utmost power that it went straight to the opponent keeper and sent him flying back into the 2 metres bck into the goals 1-1 Opponents then went for their 2nd shot and he kicked it Paulie sneezed and the ball whizzed past him opponents 2-1 Jesse then prepared for his shot but as he was about to strike a papparazi camera flash blinded him and causing him to slip over causing the crowd to echo in boos and mobbing the papparazi. the guilty  persons turned out to be a players parent  from the opponents so the oponents had to give up their 3rd shot Awesome then prepared for his shot with a sequence of 20 cartwheels followed by some break dancing moves and with amusing trickery kicked the ball past the opponent keeper 2-2. Opponents then went for their next shot and struck it briliantly but Paulie with his quick thinking did a karate kid style crane kicked and denied the striker. next up Nathaniel who like the flash ran around the court 20 times to build up momentum but unfortunately someone left an empty chip wrapper on the court and caused him to slip over. Opponent 4 then tried took his shot but Paulie just stood his ground put his arm out and told the ball to stop in his tracks Harry then took his shot but instead of shooting just bounced the ball knee to knee then using the super curls attmpted to head the ball but once again the ball hit one of the longer curls causing the ball to stray wide oponent 5 then took his shot and used all his power aimed for the centre, this time Paulie merely stood the and stopped the ball using his Handstand technique taught to him by Legendary Keeper trung. deadlocked t 2-2 the final striker Pajari took his position and with his aresenal of trickery Hypnotised the opponent striker into becoming drowsy, with his quick thinking ,Pajari with pin point accuracy kicked the ball throught he middle of the opponents keepers legs Hyenas win 3-2!!! and the crowd goes wild!!

RD 5 Vs SP Superstars
A confident  SP Superstars started with all guns blazing as they enforce a full court press strategy against the Hyenas.  The Hyenas was tentative and was put under pressure early and was down 0-5 at half time.  As the game progressed however, the Hyenas hassle the ball on the outfield and intensified their support and dedication for their teammates. It is fair to say that the score  at half time does not indicate that the Hyenas was outplayed by any measure.  In the second half, the Hyenas absorb early pressure from the Superstars and defended very well and as we scored early, the boys natural fighting spirit came to the fore and winning the second half with the score at 3-2.  The second half performance was worthy of a finals against a very talented SP Superstars comprising of U13 Southern Regional side.  Although the final result wasn’t in our favour,  I am still very impressed and satisfied with the way the boys came together as a team to fight back against all the odds despite early  inhibitions at first half, there is no doubt that in adversity these boys can stand up and deliver.
Our early tentativeness could be overcome, if we have the opportunity to practices our defensive strategies and  tactical set plays.
Tri Nations Futsal Competition (sortof)

On Saturday 19th  November saw the beginning of the inaugaral Tri Nation Futsal Competition  between the Hyenas,Spartans and newly formed Old Stars It was a beautiful sunny day and allteam turned up on time and were raring to go Unexpectedly Spartans recruited 3 more players who made them a atronger unit, this was evident in the fact that for the round robin competition Spartans remained Undefeated only to be fall to the Hyenas at the final hurdle. Old stars had a slow start but as the competition rolled on it became evident that they were beginning to gel taking a 2 nil lead over the Hyenas in the Preliminary finals. It is no doubt they and will become a formidable force in future.
The Mighty Hyenas showed once again the form that saw them win the last 2 futsal tournaments with an awesome of display of Futsal Prowess all in all it was a fantastic fun filled day enjoyed by all

Secial Mentions:

A big thank you to jimbo who tirelessly reffereed every single match with firm fairness and also the Wags ( wives and girlfriends) who although main;ly cheered for Oldstars still at least gave us a pleasant atmosphere
Round 6 vs South Hobart:
The mighty Hyenas won 6-4 against South Hobart because we were awesome!!
Tasmanian Futsal state titles 2011
where do i start? As usual the mighty hyenas achilles heel revealed itself(sluggish starts) first up vs Elite 7s who handed us our first defeat the boys were just not firing as we kneew they were capable plus the keeper was imposssible to beat
Game 2 vs Beachside: this match was a must win as Beachside had defeated the hyenas previously with a convincing 8-2 but not today the boys played their hearts out although probably still asleep and walked away with a 2-2 draw which rendered the coach quite pleased as that was what he was hoping for at least to keep in contention for the finals
Game 3 Elite 7s: although the boys were beginning to find their feet it was pretty much more of the same as the opposition were quite competitive and keeper hard to beat but at leastthis loss wasnt asbad as the last so i guess we couldnt complain
Game 4vs Beachside this was a cutthroat match where hyenas had to win by at least 8 goals to make final so we thought why not have some fun Coach just thought we had nothing to lose so just let  Hyenas loose in a full all out attack to see what we could do the state title was on the line and they responded in typical Hyenas fashion! the boy ran amuck and cored frequently they began to believe they belonged here and played with the mighty hyenas team spirit which saw them take out the under 11s and under 12s titles when the final siren blew Hyenas had won 6-2 (i think) but we thought we had missed ouit this year so we had said our goodbyes and disbanded. ( in fact Nathaniel was ready for bed!) 5 minutes later we had heard the news that we hasd made it on goals scored  and in unison we let out an almighty Hyenas roar! bring on the finals!!

Preliminary final was against Eastern United who had topped their group and the cream of the crop when  it came to Eastern Shore Futsal so this was the one we had to win to offiocially prove we were the best on Eastern Shore. Moved by the coaches pre-match speech 'Leave nothing in reserve' the boys responded in true Hyenas fashion scoring within minutes to take the early lead then out of nowhere the new recruit Mac Attack found his inner Hyena and scored twice in minutes Bass who was goaless all day then found his inner Hyena and opened up his account with a couple of majors of his own The boy played with the Hyenas spirit we have seen before in previous  finalswi the the defeats of Metro Thunder and St virgils greenand i think we won the prelims 6-2? making us the at least Eastern shore champions now for grand finals and off we went could they do it? an ol lady in the crowd was heard saying 'I am glad i came to watch this as that was the best match i have seen in my life!'

the grand final was against Elite 7s who had the better of the hyenas all day handing us 2 defeats. bu twith the renewed hyenas spirit the boys finall announced their arrival with a goal in ther first 60 seconds! we dared to dream! the game was a tight arm wrestle withe ball ball going back and forth and sat one stage Hyenas even has the lead! the boy played their hearts out till the final siren and wer gallant in defeat sp no state title this year but still the last 12 months hsd been very fruitful with 3 grand finals appearances (not bad for a team that was formed as a mucking saround discussion beside the swimming pool)
although the hyenas didnt take the titles this year we can hold our heads high as we were no mean Losers at all in fact the boys showed their true courage with their backs to the wall stood up and fought as a team and i could not be prouder now just have to look to next year

STOP PRESS!!!
Although  we lost in the grand final this year the opponent was  an under 13s team , hence we can rightly claim the hyenasfc as the state under 12s futsal champions!!
